8th Annual The Inner Loop-Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House/
Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture
Summer Writer's Residency!

In 2016, we partnered for the first time with the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture and Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House to coordinate a summer writer's residency program. That year we welcomed four area writers for one week at a time throughout the summer, and have hosted a new cohort each summer since. We are excited to see this program keep growing, and it is our hope that these residencies will continue to provide a catalyst for further engagement and collaboration.
We are now accepting applications from writers living and working in the DMV region who wish to participate in a week-long residency during the 2023 summer season. Strongest preference will be given to candidates who are early to mid-career writers with an established commitment to using writing as a means to build community; to bring awareness to critical social and environmental issues; and as a creative force of empowerment. We strongly encourage attention to themes around Woodlawn’s priority histories of the site which include the stories of the enslaved, freed people, indigenous, and their descendant communities. Candidates must have the capacity to regularly travel to and from the Woodlawn and Arcadia sites.

Selection Process and Schedule
To Apply:
If you are interested, please submit a brief writing sample along with a short proposal including why you'd like to participate and what generally you plan to work on (500 wds. max), along with preferred weeks of residence in July-August, via email to hello@theinnerlooplit.org with the subject "Woodlawn proposal."
For the 2023 residency season, The Inner Loop will sponsor one writer from an underrepresented community who might not otherwise have the means to participate in the program without financial support. The sponsorship will include a $700 stipend for the week ($100/day). If you feel you are eligible to be considered for this opportunity, please indicate so in your proposal.
Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis with priority given those submitted before May 1, 2023. Applicants will be notified by May 15 if they have been selected to participate in the program.
