5th Annual The Inner Loop-Woodlawn Estate/Arcadia Center for Sustainable Agriculture

Summer Writer's Residency!

In 2016, we partnered for the first time with the Arcadia Center for Food and Agriculture and the Woodlawn Estate and Pope Leighey House to coordinate a summer writer's residency program. That year we welcomed four area writers for one week at a time throughout the summer, and have hosted a new cohort each summer since. We are excited to see this program grow, and it is our hope that these residencies will continue to provide a catalyst for further engagement and collaborative work.

We are now accepting applications from writers living and working in the DMV region who wish to participate in a week-long residency during the 2020 summer season. Strongest preference will be given to candidates who are early to mid-career writers with an established commitment to using writing as a means to build community; to bring awareness to critical social and environmental issues; and as a creative force of empowerment. Candidates must have the capacity to regularly travel to and from the Woodlawn and Arcadia sites.

Additional details/requirements:

  • Writer participates in Orientation Day, site tours and events during the residency week.

  • Writer is offered a designated space within the Woodlawn house, with access to historic information, the grounds, the Pope-Leighey House and the Arcadia Farm.

  • Resident writes a short blog about the experience.

  • Resident composes a work to be donated to the Program.

  • Volunteer time on the farm and join Farm Tonic at end of the week (friends and family encouraged to attend).

  • End of season reading and celebration, TBD end of August (friends and family encouraged to attend).

To Apply:

If you are interested, please submit a brief writing sample along with a short proposal including why you'd like to participate and what generally you plan to work on (500 wds. max), along with preferred weeks of residence, with the subject "Woodlawn proposal."

Note - Please apply only if you would be available  for an Orientation Day in the last week of June and Residency during one full week in July or August 2020.

Please direct any other inquiries via email to Courtney and include "Woodlawn Residency" in the subject line.
